My name is Elaine McCollom. I’ve been teaching for 20 years, the last six years at UC Davis and before that at Sac State, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, for both native and non-native speakers. I dare not even contemplate what a layoff would mean to me. I have no spouse, children or siblings to fall back on, and both of my parents have passed away. Losing my job would destroy me very quickly. Layoffs and the human costs they entail should not even be an option. During times of crisis, we need to protect the most vulnerable first, and we, as lecturers, are most certainly that.
