My name is Claude and I’ve been the romance languages librarian at Berkeley for 13 years. For me, a June 30th lay-off would be devastating. Most UC employees live paycheck to paycheck and are as committed to our institutions as we are to our own families. With constant reductions in personnel and to its collection budget, the library has been in decline for decades. Any lay-offs, or furloughs for those who make $150K, would signal the absolute end of the state of California’s commitment to public higher education and it would be time for us all to start looking for job’s elsewhere.
