UC President Janet Napolitano has pledged no layoffs for essential workers through June 30th – and has been silent on what happens after. We know that COVID-19 will continue to threaten our communities long after that date. But we also know that our students need us to be there for them, whether it’s online or on campus.
We’re demonstrating our commitment to teaching with resilience and compassion no matter the challenges. In return, UC-AFT teaching faculty, standing in solidarity with our union allies and all workers in the UC system, demand a clear, long-term commitment from the UC that we will not be tossed aside in the midst of a once-in-a-century crisis.
On May 1st, we are launching an action for job security, and we invite all UC workers and our allies to join us. We will post a “virtual picket” with this information, (which means a mosaic of our faces and stories designed to recreate the experience of standing up together, being seen and seeing each other as we act in solidarity) publicize it in traditional and social media, and make sure the UC administration sees it. And we’ll continue to gather more faces and stories, too.
UC works because we do – that hasn’t changed, and never will.
