I’m David Hinckley, a lecturer in English at UC RIverside. While I “officially” have 17 years and some months of service, I’ve been at least part-time as a lecturer since 1995, and I was a T.A. before that from 1985-1990. During this time I’ve been laid off twice before, only to be rehired immediately when things improved. Over the last ten years or so, I’ve been full-time and thought that I had finally gained a measure of job security for me and my family. I’ve been hearing reassurances that I could eventually retire, that all would be great now, etc. Once more I can see it isn’t so.
