I’m KM Mendiola, a first-year transfer student at UCLA. A June 30th lay-off means disrespect for the basic dignity of lecturers and UCLA workers, especially in the midst of a precarious COVID economy. It means ignoring the fact that lecturers are often the professors best-integrated into the communities and subjects they teach about. It means a refusal for the neoliberal institution to prioritize their students and workers over their top-earners and big names. It means a refusal to reduce investments into destructive imperialist war industries like Blackrock. It means betraying the people.
