My name is Amber West. This is my fourth year teaching at UCLA. As my family’s primary breadwinner, a June 30th lay-off means a loss of health insurance and no way to pay bills with a newborn on the way. UC Lecturers are more likely than tenure-track faculty to be women. We’re paid much less than our tenured and tenure-track colleagues, despite teaching more classes and having the same credentials. The global pandemic should not be used as an excuse to thicken the glass ceiling and increase the gender pay gap. Our students deserve better from the nation’s top public university.
